PI2AES - Pro Audio Shield
PI2AES Status update - 04/19/2023
The original PI2AES has been replaced the new PI2ES2.0. Also see our Mercury Streamer and our PI2AES-LITE for suitable options.
FEATURES
- RASPBERRY PI 4 COMPATIBLE - Tested on the latest Raspberry Pi 4 using Volumio, Moode and Ropiee
- AES TRANSMITTER – The industry standard WM8804 converts the RPi I2S stream to AES3/SPDIF formatted data at 24-Bit up to 192Khz Frame Rate
- SPDIF COAX OUTPUT – An RCA connector with Isolation Transformer provides coaxial transmission of the SPDIF Audio Data Stream.
- SPDIF OPTICAL OUTPUT – Isolated Optical Transmitter Supports Consumer Level DAC and AVR inputs
- AES BNC OUTPUT - A 75 ohm BNC connector with Isolation Transformer provides for Single Ended AES transmission.
- AES BALANCED OUTPUT – An RS-422 Transmitter coupled with Isolation Transformer allows the transmission of balanced audio data with 110 ohm impedance via the Professional Audio Standard XLR Connector
- BUFFERED I2S OUTPUT – Parallel Buffered I2S is available for direct short distance connection to off-board D/A. Perfect for DIY use! I2C for control is also provided as well as 5V Regulated and the Input Voltage Rail
- DIFFERENTIAL I2S OUTPUT – A DS26LV31 Differential Transmitter is used to drive the I2S Bus via LVDS over a standard HDMI Connector. Rev. P3.x supports GD Audio, Rev. P4 support PS Audio.
PI2AES FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do the PI2AES outputs work simultaneously?
A: Yes, all digital audio outputs deliver the same audio data at the same time. This includes the buffered I2S and I2S over HDMI.
Q: Is the PI2AES compatible with the new Raspberry PI 4?
A: Yes, the PI2AES has been tested on the PI 4 using Moode Audio version 6.10.
Q: Does the PI2AES power the PI?
A: Yes, the PI2AES delivers 5V @ 3A to the PI. A jumper plug (marked PI5V) on the PI2AES allows the power to the PI to be enabled or disabled as desired.
Q: Can I power the PI separate from the PI2AES.
A: Yes, simply remove the PI5V jumper plug and provide power to the PI via it's usb power input as normal.
Q: What happens if I forget to remove the jumper?
A: Nothing bad! The PI2AES contains a protection circuit that allows both sides to be powered separately. But, Power Supply noise from the PI is somewhat reduced when the jumpier is removed.
Q: What power supply do I need for the PI2AES?
A: The PI2AES is designed to operate with a nominal input voltage 24V (+/- 10%). We sell a High Quality Meanwell 24V @ 1.67A supply specifically for the PI2AES.
Q: Are there two different acrylic cases for the PI4 and PI2/3?
A: The acrylic case we provide has two different right side and front plates for the PI3 and PI4. You just assemble which one is appropriate for you.
Q: What is the purpose of the jumper on pins 13-14 of the 16-pin I2S Header?
A: This jumper enables the internal PI2AES Power Switch. External add-on boards will have their own power on mechanism and this jumper would then be removed.
Q: What pinout is supported by the I2S over HDMI?
A: Rev. P3.x supports the Gustard Audio pinout. PS Audio works but the channels are swapped. Rev. P4.x supports the PS Audio pinout.
